I’ll be praying for you; please pray for me and all the priests of the

GOD IS REVEALED TO ALL: God leads us just as surely as the star led the Magi to Bethlehem. We are not in control but must trust in
God’s loving presence and sure guidance.
There will be setbacks and challenges before we attain that for which we
look: our everyday lives are filled
with obstacles and contradictions which can get us off track. We must “search diligently”: God and God’s
will can be found in many circumstances of our family life, work, and leisure
times. Sometimes we must change course
and take “another way”: conversion is an ongoing milestone in Christian living.
This feast day of the Lord’s Epiphany
reminds us that the Light of Christ is a diffuse one; it permeates all the
world, and diffuses salvation everywhere.
Our response: do God homage.

IN THE LITURGY for Epiphany, Psalm 72 is not an intercessory prayer that the Israelite
king fulfill the role given him by God, but a description of Christ who
completely fulfills that role. In
singing it we proclaim who Christ is and why every nation on earth will adore
him. As we pray and sing this psalm,
take some time each day to offer Christ your personal adoration.
THE BLESSING OF THE HOME ON
EPIPHANY
Chalk that has been blessed is
used to mark: 20 + C + M
+ B + 07 on the lintel of the door of the
main entrance. The numerals consecrate
the New Year. The four crosses are the
four seasons. The C-M-B are the
initials of the names of the magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. Another explanation of C-M-B is “Christus Mansionem Benedicat – May Christ
bless the house.”
Gold: The gift given by
Melchior, a king of Arabia. He is said
to have been the oldest of the Three Kings.
Frankincense: The gift given by
Balthasar, a king from Saba, present day Yemen. Frankincese is resin from the dried sap of the Boswellia tree – a
tree that has grown on the craggy slopes of the Arabian Sea for thousands of
years. In ancient times frankincense
and gold were equally precious.
Myrrh: The gift given by
Caspar, a king from Tarsus, present day southern Turkey. Myrrh is also a resin used as incense but
with a bitter fragrance. In ancient
times, the finest myrrh came from southern Arabia. Myrrh was the most treasured of the three and was worth seven
times its weight in gold. It was used
for burial ceremonies.
