SAINT FRANCIS DE SALES: Francis was born in a castle in
France in 1567. When he was baptized,
his mother said: “Now, my son, you are the friend of the angels, the brother of
Jesus, the temple of the Holy Spirit, and a member of the Church. Now you must belong to God forever.”
Francis received Holy Communion as often
as he could. He said: “Jesus is the
teacher of holiness. I go to Him
because I want Him to teach me how to become a saint. Of what use to me is all I learn in school if I do not become
holy?”
Francis became a lawyer, but he then was
inspired to follow Jesus. He be a
priest and was later made bishop of Geneva.
He died in 1622. He is honored
as the patron of spiritual writers and his feast day is January 24.

THROUGH
BAPTISM WE LIVE: Like the disciples in the gospel, we are to “believe
in him.” This means that we are to make
a lifelong covenant with God.
Traditionally, this is how we understand our baptism. It is our initial celebration of a
relationship with God that is intimate, loving, lasting. Our fidelity during this life assures us
that death is not a separation but an entrance into eternal life where the wine
never runs out, the rejoicing never ceases, and the depths of love are never
exhausted.
During
Ordinary Time we journey with Jesus through a Gospel (this year, Luke’s Gospel)
toward our fulfillment at the messianic banquet. Let us taste the wine, and know that the good only gets better!
ABOUT
LITURGICAL MUSIC: You can only sing
about the saving acts of God if your recognize them. Sometimes these saving acts come in extraordinary ways, but most
often they come in the quiet events of ordinary, everyday living.
The
prayer is to see them so that you can believe.
Be on the lookout this week for how Christ will turn the ordinary water
of your life into the wine of salvation.
The
purpose of liturgical music is not to entertain us but to help us surrender to
the transforming action of the liturgy.
During Ordinary Time the liturgy pulls us into the paschal mystery
journey of ongoing Christian living.
The liturgical music we sing during this period is meant to help us
deepen our understanding of and participation in that journey.
